Infrared repair is a cost effective method of asphalt repair. Infrared repair techniques are faster than cutting out and replacing asphalt and they do not leave a joint around the perimeter of a repair for water to seep into. Infrared machines warm the existing asphalt in and around the repair area. The soft asphalt can be scarified to mix with fresh asphalt as needed, and then compacted. This is a permanent and attractive repair that has recycled the existing asphalt. This asphalt program is intended for repair of existing asphalt pavement distresses not caused by weak subgrade or poor quality of existing materials.
Typical Repairs:
STEP 1 Sweep away loose debris or standing water from repair and surrounding area. Remember, IR is not readily absorbed by light colored materials like sand or snow. STEP 2 Light the chamber, and position it over the area to be repaired. Be sure to allow at least 12" of heated area beyond the perimeter of the repair. STEP 3 Allow heat to penetrate for 7-10 minutes. To insure proper heating time, check the surface temperature of the asphalt at 7 min. and every minute thereafter using an IR thermometer. STEP 4 Remove the heater, and rake softened asphalt. STEP 5 Spray a maltines rejuvenator onto the heated area. This will replace some of the light oils that have oxidized out over time. STEP 6 Add fresh asphalt from the reclaimer and lute to correct grade. STEP 7 The repair is ready to be rolled. STEP 8 Compact the repair using a vibratory roller. Be sure to roll the edges first to fuse the repaired area with the heated but untouched surrounding pavement. STEP 9 Although the color is different, the finished repair is now an integral part of the existing road.
